Fleming Park Night Rogaine
November 1-2, 2008
Event Notes
Site
- Fleming Park is an urban park surrounding Lake Jacomo and is one of the best urban parks in western Missouri. It offers hiking and mountain biking trails, fishing, boating, hunting and an old Missouri town.
- It is typical Midwest terrain with deep stream valleys bordered with large rock outcrops and boulders. The vegetation varies from open fields to thick undergrowth. There are many areas of open woods and other areas that are not so pleasant to run through.
Map
- The maps have been prepared over the last several years by Dick Luckerman. They are very accurate and detailed.
- Stay clear of all out-of-bounds areas that are clearly marked on the map with either black or purple vertical lines.
- Dark green on the map (fight) is very difficult to move through easily. There are many thorny bushes in these areas, especially on the east side of the lake.
- Open areas have thick, tall grass. Running speed is very slow.
- There is an unmapped hiking trail around the animal enclosure near center of map on Fleming Park East
- West map: Scale 1:15,000 Contours 3 meters (10 feet).
- East map: Scale 1:15,000 Contours 5 meters.
- Blue Springs map: Scale: 1:15,000 Contours 3 meters (10 feet).
- International clues are on the maps, but loose control sheets (including long-hand clues) may be picked up at registration.
Course and Controls
- Daylight Savings Time ends at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Remember to set your watches back 1 hour.
- Competitors try to collect the maximum points in a limited time (12 or 4 hours). The point value (ranging from 10 to 60 points) of each control is based on difficulty of navigation and distance from the start.
- The “tens” digit of the control number indicates its value; e.g. #11 is 10 points, #34 is 30 points. There are 60 controls with a total value of 2100 points.
- If two or more finishers have the same total points, the finisher with the fastest time wins.
- There will be a late penalty of 10 points per minute. Don’t be late!
- Team members must stay within 20 meters of each other. The finish time for the team will be recorded when the last team member crosses the finish line. Be ready to yell your bib number to the finish chief before crossing the finish line.
Safety
- Use care when crossing roads. Look both ways!
- There are only two water stops, located at the North and South of the mapped area. There is only water…no food.
- If you are injured, call 911 in an emergency, or the phone number listed on the clue sheets for lesser needs. During the night, there may be some patrols at irregular intervals to offer rides if needed. We will patrol the main road around the lake, but realize that several park roads are closed at night.
