Course Setter: Mike Shifman
Weather: Clear skies, temperature 80-85 degrees
Maybe it was a little hot for the 65 participants, but it was sure pleasant sitting around at the Start/Finish area waiting for the runners. The temperature was around 85 degrees at 5:00 p.m. when the 2-hour Score O and the 6-hour Twilight Rogaine began and it had only cooled down a few degrees by 11:00 p.m. when the race ended. Actually, the last person came in at 10:33 and we were almost packed up by 11:00.
Course setter Mike Shifman, , had set out, with the help of Paul Clatterbuck, and Dick and Nancy Neuburger, 45 controls around Blue Springs Lake in Jackson County, Missouri. He estimated that the total distance to visit all controls was about 18 to 20 miles or 30 kilometers. He didn’t think that anyone could get to all of them, especially since half of the race was in the dark. He was wrong! Joe Barrett was the first in with all controls punched in only 5 hrs and 7 minutes, followed closely by the Adventure Racing Team “That’s What She Said”. Dave Eaton came in 3rd at 5:33:25.
In the 2-hour Score O, Off Constantly was first with a score of 380. Russ McDowell and Mom & John were 2nd and 3rd respectively. It was great to see so many new faces at the event; we hope they continue to enjoy our sport with us.
Thank you to Reta Roe, registrar and control pickup; Nick Hockman, registrar and refreshments; Dick Luckerman, map-maker and control pickup; and Twilight, control pickup.
