Stoll Park Sprint Meet Report
Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park
Overland Park, KS
June 7, 2008
Submitted by Dick Neuburger
The Stoll Park Sprint was held on a hot and windy June afternoon. Did I mention that it was windy? Really windy? Thanks to the “froggy” bean bags that someone had made many years ago, we were able to hold most of the papers in place during registration, start, and finish.
Well anyway, course setter Mike Shifman set out a 14-control, 3.0-km course on a brand new map of Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park in Overland Park, KS. For such an open area, there were several legs with several route choices. Unfortunately, one control was mismapped and misplaced and it caused some lost time for most competitors. We promise to get it right next time.
Michael Eglinski led the men and was followed closely by Kelly Sumner and Bruce Duffin. Mary Jones was the best female. There were 42 participants in all. Points were awarded, based on the results of the sprint, for the USOF 2008 Sprint Series. You can check them at http://www.sprintseries.org/ .
There were several groups in the competition and many first-timers. We hope everyone had a great time.
Thank you to Reta Roe, registration; Nancy Neuburger, starts; Mike Shifman, course setter and finish; Paul Clatterbuck, finish; Matt and Joe Barrett, results and control pickup.
The orienteering event was followed by a Potluck Picnic and Annual Meeting. The food was plentiful and delicious. We enjoyed each others’ company. The Annual Meeting was short.
Thank you everyone for all of your help during the season!
