Knob Noster SP 8-hour Rogaine Meet Report
April 14-15, 2007
By Dick Neuburger

About 35 people lined up for the start of the Knob Noster State Park 8-hour Rogaine on the night of April 14, 2007.  The night promised to be a wet and cold one.  There had been snow and rain the night before and the streams were swollen and the paths were muddy.  The forecast temperatures weren’t that great either.  Race time temperature was 46 F, but it fell gradually during the night to a low of 32 F.

Nonetheless, 10 teams and 10 individuals accepted the challenge to find as many of the 43 controls as possible within the 8-hour time limit.  Eric Buckley managed the feat quite easily, finding all controls in only 6:48.  Phil Nicolas was close behind with 1270 points in 7:58.  Sharon Crawford, the only solo woman, would have been 5th  overall, were it not for 130 penalty points for being 13 minutes late.  The mixed team SDK had 870 points in winning their gold medal, and Two Bad picked up 1300 points to win gold in the Male Team division.  Team #2 of Scout Troop 425 was the high scorer for the scouts.

Hot breakfast prepared by registrar and cook Reta Roe awaited the participants at the finish at 6:00 a.m.  Sunday dawned clear and beautiful.  At least it hadn’t rained during the night and no one had disappeared in the wet forest.

Thanks to Mike Shifman, course setter and results; Reta Roe, registrar and cook; Reta’s friend Bob, cook; Dick Luckerman, Suzy Stephens and friend, control pickup.
